What is a bookeeper?

According to HRDC, the definition of a bookkeeper is as follows:

Bookkeepers maintain complete sets of books, keep records of accounts, verify the procedures used for recording financial transactions, and provide personal bookkeeping services. The term bookkeeper refers to a person who can complete a full set of books up to and including a trial balance.

Bookkeeper or Accountant?

There is not necessarily a clear line where a bookkeepers role ends and an accountants starts. Where a bookkeeper is mainly focussed on the recording of transactions of the business, an accountant will take this information to prepare information for the use of the stakeholders, to prepare and advise for tax purposes, as well as perhaps auditing the results and more.

Although these roles may overlap depending on the individuals and the needs of the specific businesses, both roles have their own important role to play!
